FAQ

WHAT IS ASHTANGA YOGA?

Ashtanga is a potent yoga discipline where emphasis is placed on the synchronisation of breath and movement, the methodical series of postures, bandhas (pelvic floor & lower abdominal locks), and drishti (fixed gaze). Together these create a system that makes the body light, fluid and strong while the mind becomes calm and meditative.

IS ASHTANGA A WORKOUT?

No. Although outwardly there are some intense physical aspects to Ashtanga – it should never be thought of as a workout. Think of yoga as putting equal effort into body, breath and mind. When one of these areas becomes the sole focus, the practice becomes imbalanced. We need to be aware of the body, breath and mind simultaneously to achieve a union (yoga) between your internal and external worlds.

WHAT TO BRING? WEAR? DRINK? EAT?

You can bring your own yoga mat if you like. Otherwise we have plenty here for you to choose from and some quality cork mats for sale.
Wear your regular active wear. Nothing too restrictive.
Drink plenty of water before and after practice, but not during.
Do not eat for at least an hour before you start. The texts recommend a plant based diet in alignment with the first limb of Ashtanga yoga. This will also support creating a light, energetic and supple body through pranic whole foods that are natural with minimal processes done to them.

HOW LONG ARE ASHTANGA CLASSES?

– Mysore: 60 – 120 minutes (60 minutes for newer students. More experienced students practice longer).
– Led: 90 minutes.
